Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s – a.k.a. Gentoo Foundation
Today, reading Daniel’s blog my feelings about Gentoo Foundation and about all the people involved there have found the definitive confirm. The Foundation is drifting. Simple, clear (even to my grandmother) and… sad. All the innovation done by them in the latest years is simply rubbish, not integrated at all and sometimes dangerous for the same users (Gentoo Linux Installer as example).
“I set up the Foundation at the request of quite a few extremely vocal Gentoo developers who were tremendously passionate about the need for Gentoo to be rushed into a not-for-profit entity before its time. Unfortunately, it seems that many of these people were enamored with the idea of having a not-for-profit bloom into existence overnight, but weren’t actually interested in doing the hard work required to run a not-for-profit. ” Daniel Robbins.
The only way to save Gentoo, is to give it back to Daniel. Gentoo relengs, if you love your distribution, do this for you and for all the people that still trust it. Every single day you lose a bunch of users, every single day I realize that the whole thing is getting very sad. Attention, I’m preparing the path to fork away from your bugs, definitely. It’s just a matter of time.
Daniel Robbins was the guy that spent his nights working on his creature, it wasn’t a matter of money nor popularity, it was a matter of passion. The same thing that led Gentoo Foundation to the TOP TEN distro arena, and now, it’s just lost in the mists of time.
I was a Gentoo User Representative but these are my official resignations. Oh, I forgot, User Representative Team never worked. Maybe because of you too.
W00+! U go Lxnay! Dreams cannot be achieved by lazy people. Passionate work is what makes innovation grand!
I tried the latest gentoo, I couldn’t even get it installed. The installer would quit halfway, or finish but the system was unbootable. I was hoping that it had matured since I last used it, it had only gotten worse.
Sabayon is everything Gentoo should be, and I think a lot of Gentoo fans are realizing this which is why Sabayon is much higher than Gentoo on distro watch.
“Attention, I’m preparing the path to fork away from your bugs, definitely. It’s just a matter of time.”
I assume you refer to entropy and new package management which will once and for all disconnect Sabayon from Gentoo. I can only say that I hope you succeed. The world will greatly appreciate truly good package management (anyone who’s used RPMs, DEBs, or portage knows what I mean).
I am extremely excited–this is the phase which will make or break Sabayon!
i’ve been using gentoo since 2005 and just started to use sabayon on my parents computer(only to skip 1 month of compiling gentoo), and i think it’s sad to know gentoo it is having problems and that can lead to it’s destruction, i think sabayon and gentoo should not be compared, also i think sabayon is doing a great work on the desktop pc platform and gentoo should not follow nor try to become more similar to sabayon. i dont see gentoo has as a distribuition but a meta distribuition and i think that it is his true power. i dont use any of live cds or graphical installs (they only limit gentoo and makes the experience of building gentoo a true hell) only the minimal install cd and build every package 1 by 1 and it is perfect that way. dont try to turn it in to a easy install because it ill hurn gentoo’s true nature and limit it’s possibilities.
i think gentoo and sabayon should work together has 1 meta distribuition (gentoo) capable of self build on any platform focused on flexibility to be performed by relativly experienced users not the average user and 1 easy install desktop distribuition (sabayon) made specificly for the desktop users that don’t want to build everything from scratch.
rv78 has said it all.
Much like what Debian is to Ubuntu, that is the true calling of Gentoo.Gentoo should focus on the following
1. Patching and stabilizing apps, optimizing system services and simplifying configuration.
2. Create a rock solid dependency chain and aid distro developers by providing stable and tested platform.
3.Maintain the rock solid nerd savvy stance that it always had.
It is the greatest Meta Distro with immense potential for optimized hardware deployment.I hope Gentoo relengs are listening!!
